As fellow art enthusiasts we operate this site and our eBay business as much for fun as for financial reward. We greatly enjoy the process of discovering and presenting great paintings and very much value our, all too brief, ownership of them.

For us the process is all about enriching and extending the visual experience. A painting can offer a unique glimpse into another time, place, season, object or emotion. Paintings, even modest paintings, have the power to change the way we see the world. And therein resides their true value and purpose.

Please feel free to contact us to discuss any aspect of our inventory or service.

Here are a few things to bear in mind whilst you are on this site.

About our inventory…

We don't specialise in a particular style, medium or era; but there is definitely a common factor that defines us. The paintings that we acquire are a reflection of our personal taste; poignant, honest, quirky, and redolent of a bygone era or a far-off place.

About condition…

Whenever possible we present and ship our artworks in ‘as found’ condition. That’s because we understand the satisfaction of receiving a painting and uncovering its origins.

If a painting is sealed into a frame or stretcher (by a frame maker’s label and/or backing sheet), even though this may mean we have less to go on when describing the work, we will conquer our curiosity and ship intact.

About descriptions…

When we estimate the era we do so based on whatever evidence is available to us, painting subject/style, frame type, media, condition. We undertake this is good faith and with great enthusiasm but we take no responsibility for inaccuracies and the purchaser must make their own enquiries.

About item images…

In our photography we attempt to (albeit remotely) reproduce that feeling of holding the painting in your hands.

We show a variety of angles and close-ups so that you get to see, for instance, impasto areas of paint and surface texture and the profile of the frame. And whenever relevant (say, interesting inscription, or stretcher) we show the back of the painting.

We take care to colour correct our photography to match the original as best we can. Be mindful, however, that there can be variations in monitors and monitor settings which dramatically effect colour, tone and contrast. The same, of course, is true of the human eye.

About eBay…

We trade extensively on eBay (artsalvageco) and we are proud of our 100% feedback. Our speed of response and in particular our packing have become the stuff of legends. Read what our customers think about us and follow our auctions via the eBay link at the foot of this page.

About payment…

We prefer to receive funds via PayPal although we accept cheques and bankers orders. If you intend to pay by cheque or bankers order please email us so that we can hold the item for you.

About shipping…

Paintings (UK and International) are shipped within 2 days of receiving cleared funds.

In the UK (Excluding Highlands & Islands and NI) there is a uniform charge of £8.21 for single or multiple purchases up to a weight of 70 kg. Highlands & Islands and Northern Ireland are charged at £15.52.

All our shipping is charged on an ‘at cost’ basis.

All our shipping costs apply to both single and multiple purchases. Shipping ten paintings (on the same shipment and to the same address) is the same cost as shipping one.

We ship internationally either by DHL or Parcelforce. Smaller items can be shipped by Royal Mail. Our checkout automatically calculates shipping costs on a zone by zone basis.

If you wish to negotiate an individual price for shipping please contact us.

About packaging…

We take great care when shipping our precious paintings. It can take over an hour to pack just one but our reward in the fact that, despite the best efforts of couriers, we haven’t had a single breakage.

There is a small fee for packing and handling which is itemised separately.

About insurance…

No carrier that we can find (and we’ve looked very hard) will provide in-transit insurance for paintings. Few people will tell you this, least of all the carriers…but check out the exclusion list in their terms. They’re a real trap for the unwary.

We will guarantee to ship in good faith via a reputable shipper but, in light of the above, our responsibility ends with providing you with a consignment note.

Having said that we have been shipping to some very obscure parts of the world for years and never suffered a single incident of loss or damage.

About the trade…

We welcome inquiries from the trade. Please bear in mind that as traders ourselves we buy as well as sell. So if you have something to offer us don’t hold back…
